What a day what a day, boy am I enthusiastic!!! I am Reinert Pieter van der Westhuizen(better known as Rhino at camp), the kids love trying to say my full name though. I am from South Africa and this will be my 6th year at Camp Carolina. In my years at camp, I have done many different things and fulfilled many different roles from Head of Music to White Water Rafting, to Head of Wakeboarding and Surfing, and also Head Counselor of the Dogs Tribe. I am a passionate, enthusiastic, caring, and responsible person who aims to influence the lives of kids, as well as the adults I work with positively and do my part in making this world a better place for all of us.

What are you most proud of/biggest achievement in life so far?: I am most proud of my work at Camp Carolina. I love challenging myself as this is the best way to improve. Camp allows this and we as counselors challenge ourselves and become the best version of ourselves by motivating and assisting the boys to challenge themselves and by striving towards becoming their true selves and best selves i.e. True Gentlemen.
What is your favorite hobby/sport/thing to do during your free time?: I love them all, I love the ones I have been doing for years, and I love the ones I have just started to challenge myself with and enjoy. Music, Wakeboarding, Surfing, Rock Climbing, White water rafting, Trail running. Name it and I have done it, or want to do it.
What is your favorite thing about working with children?: Seeing the smile on their face after a good day or great moment. Whether it's conquering something they were challenged with. A conversation that sparked joy in them or helped them through something hard. The influence we as counselors can have on the boys is massive, which makes it both extremely rewarding, as well as a big responsibility.
What impact are you most excited to make this year at CCB?: I want the boys to have fun, to have the best Summer they have ever had, by doing lots of fun activities. More than that though, I want them to learn what it means to be a good, strong, kind, and willing advocate for what is good and right. Both for themselves and others. And to be able to take that with them in other areas of their lives, whether they come to camp once or 10 times.
What goal or camp philosophy do you really want your campers to learn this summer?: To be a True Gentleman and all which that encompasses. To challenge yourself, yet know how to do it in a safe way for you and others. To share a kind word and have it be genuine. To look after each other the way you want to and ought to be looked after. To be or become the best version of yourself. To have fun, and lots of it !!!
