Out of Camp Trips

Get Ready for Adventure!

At Camp Carolina, our campers have so many unique and thrilling out-of-camp trip options to choose from everyday! Our surrounding area is filled with lakes, rivers, trails, rock-faces, and boulders in both mountainous terrain and the flat lands of the valleys, providing us with the perfect playground for a wide variety of land-based and water-based adventures. We orient, train, and certify our counselors throughout the entire month of May until Opening Day of camp so that they are highly trained and very familiar with our tripping program -- how it runs and the places we go!

Water-based adventures & Trips

With over 100 waterfalls in our county, the sound of falling water is never far away! Due to man’s influence on our natural waterways there are many manmade lakes and dam-released rivers for our recreation.

The water-based sports we offer out of camp on local streams, creeks, rivers, lakes, sounds, and oceans are whitewater rafting, whitewater kayaking, fly fishing, tubing, surfing, wakeboarding, and sea kayaking. All of our water-based trips will have at least one staff-member who is either a certified American Red Cross Lifeguard or a Swift Water Rescue Technician, plus a Wilderness First Responder. And that is because we like to be over-prepared and over-certified to respond to the needs of the boys in our care!

All boys who attend Camp Carolina will have the opportunity to go rafting. We have commercial permits on the Pigeon and French Broad Rivers. We have our own fleet of Self-Bailing Rafts and we train all of our own in-house Raft Guides who are part of our summer staff team and go through the same rigorous vetting and training processes as all of our hired counselors do.

Boys will be required to learn self-rescue on our lake before they go on whitewater kayaking trips. As their skills progress, they will be invited to attempt rivers that are more challenging. We continuously, throughout the session, work with boys on their flat, moving and whitewater skills to bring them up to the next level. Our Whitewater Instructors are all certified by American Canoe Association and Rescue 3 International.

We are in the heart of Southern Trophy Trout Water Fishing. We teach boys to fly fish in camp at our stocked trout pond. We only use artificial bait and catch and release where required; but we do love trout dinners on our overnight camping trips!

We offer wakeboarding and wake surfing on our fleet of wake boats to boys who have completed the 5th grade. We run these trips on Lake Jocassee, which is a big and beautiful lake with plenty of calm and quiet coves that provide excellent conditions for wakeboarding and wake surfing with our trained instructor team.

We paddle our sea kayaks locally on freshwater lakes. We offer full-day and overnight camping trips for our sea kayakers!

Tubing is an out of camp trip that all of our campers can enjoy! We swim and float our way down either the Tuckaseegee River or Section 0 of the French Broad. All summer long, we offer surfing trips to boys who have completed the 5th grade. It’s only a 4-hour drive to Charleston, where we camp out for 2 nights on an island campground and have 3 days of surfing and coastal fun at Folly Beach!
